The time has come to reveal the surprise film of this edition: none other than Fatherland, directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and starring Sandra Hüller. Recently presented in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the film earned Pawlikowski the Best Director Award. Following Ida and Cold War, the acclaimed Polish filmmaker returns with one of the most eagerly anticipated European films of the year.
It is the summer of 1949, and the world hangs in the balance amid the tensions of the Cold War. Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter, Erika, embark on a journey through a Germany devastated by war, traveling from American-controlled Frankfurt to Weimar, where Soviet influence still prevails. Returning to Germany after sixteen years of exile in the United States, Mann is overwhelmed by the devastation of his homeland and by the condition in which he finds his own family.
