Animest.20 Guest Schools: EKA Estonia and MOME Hungary Visit Bucharest

A cherished Animest tradition is showcasing a diversity of perspectives on the state of the art in animation worldwide through the films we screen, as well as through the direct interactions we facilitate between the Bucharest audiences and students and experts representing some of the top animation schools in the world.

For our 20th edition this year, you are in for a double treat: the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) in Tallinn, Estonia and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest, Hungary are both coming to the Animest International Animation Film Festival with dedicated screenings and events.

EKA – the Estonian Academy of Arts

Established in 1914, the Estonian Academy of Arts is the only public university in Estonia providing higher education in fine arts, design, architecture, media, visual studies, art history, and conservation. The aim of the Academy is to be “in the midst of life happening.” This has inspired them to create partnerships with international universities, as well as local and international businesses, and to train students in entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights, career planning, and project management, beyond their artistic development.

EKA’s Animation Department and its student works have won over 140 awards at international animation festivals, including a Special Mention for a Student Film at Animest in 2018 for Once in the Fields of Boredom (directed by Teele Strauss, 2017).

At Animest.20, you may enjoy a curated selection of EKA films from the past few years, showcasing the full scope of the various techniques, narratives and artistic styles that the students develop during their studies. From humorous retellings of Estonian folklore, to experimental journeys through sound and landscape, to philosophical questions of AI and the role of the artist, as well as much more, this screening will have a little something for everyone.

Immerse yourself in the world of EKA through the Anima Natura selection on Wednesday, October 8, at 8.30 PM, at the Cervantes Institute. You can read more about the titles included in the selection here.

MOME – the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design

The Animation Community of MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest) has been one of the leading creative workshops in Hungarian animation for more than 40 years. MOME Anim is not only a university training program, but also one of the leading creative workshops in the Hungarian animation world. From the very first moment, students learn hands-on techniques required throughout the entire creative process and practice many aspects of making films, from applied filmmaking to the creation of unique works of art.

Beyond education, MOME engages in project, incubation and research activities with a focus on talent management and content development. Their production activities include various animation projects with national and international partners. They run the Kiskakas and Friss Kakas Animation Film Days, exhibitions, film screenings, conferences and professional forums.

Over the past 15 years, MOME Anim’s work has received numerous international awards, and the films specifically have won prizes all over the world, from Cannes to Hiroshima, from Berlin to the Oscar shortlist. At these festivals, MOME graduates have received countless prizes and awards.

The MOME activities are part of the rich tradition of Hungarian animation, and they see themselves as one of the guardians of this treasure, able to renew and revitalise it.
